I recently decided to make a public profile for promoting books etc. While it’s been great for the most part, there have been some issues and it’s rather frustrating. As a woman, I do not appreciate getting a private message only to open it and find a man’s penis. Several times I have reported it to Facebook, yet these men are still doing it and there aren’t any ramifications. I took matters into my own hands.
I’m inserting a read more break here because of graphic content.
This was sent to me and when I reported it to facebook, nothing was done. So I took this image and posted it publicly on my own timeline and I tagged the man who did this.
Let’s make something clear, this is considered sexual harassment and it is not cool. I have posted on my timeline that this type of behavior is unwanted and unwelcome. Despite my attempts to report the behavior, Facebook took my post down and gave me a warning.
So, how can we combat this type of harassment when it happens? Yes, we can block and report, but that doesn’t stop it from happening to someone else. Why isn’t Facebook doing more? I am getting invitations to pornography groups and other things. Reporting those pages was a waste of time. I received messages saying they didn’t violate community standards but calling someone out for sending me a picture of their dick doesn’t violate them, apparently.
In the mean time, if I continue to get pictures of penises, I will publicly post them. Maybe if these men are embarrassed by it, they will stop this nasty behavior.
The same goes for women, though I haven’t received any pictures of a vagina.
Facebook needs to address this because it’s becoming a problem. It is NOT ok to send random women images like this. If they were to do this in public, they would be arrested.
UPDATE: Facebook has disabled my public profile. I was given no explanation. I doubt it will be reinstated, but I find it shameful that the perpetrator was able to get away with this and I was penalized.
