There has been an outrage over Sansa’s wedding night and I have to admit that it made me uncomfortable as well. I’ve read several comments that made my stomach turn. One being that Daenerys wasn’t raped during her wedding. If you look at the end of this clip, Daenerys is crying when Khal Drogo disrobes her. To me, this does not make her a willing participant. Daenerys came to love Khal Drogo, but that does not mean she wasn’t raped. Just because you are married to someone, doesn’t mean that you can’t be raped. Any time a woman (or a man) says no and you continue, that’s rape.
Fast forward to this past week’s episode of Game of Thrones. Sansa was clearly uncomfortable, her body language said that she did not want to have sex with Ramsey “The Douche Bag” Bolton. Even if a woman doesn’t say know with words, she can still say no with her actions.
Having said that let me address something else.
The Game of Thrones is a violent, bloody world and we’ve seen a lot of disturbing things. The Red Wedding, Jamie Lannister raping Cersei and We already know that Ramsey is a sadistic fuck. He cut off Theon’s dick! So why are we surprised that Sansa’s fate wasn’t pleasant? Don’t get me wrong, rape is no joke, but when you put it in the context of the show, how can you not be surprised?
If you’ve watched Game of Thrones up to Season 5 and didn’t feel outrage at any other point in the series, then I wonder if we are watching the same show. Rob Stark’s pregnant wife was murdered, Kaitlyn Stark had her neck slit, Bran Stark was shoved off a tower, Arya witnessed her father’s death and a multitude of other violent scenes, why is Sansa’s so different?
I’m not saying rape is something we shouldn’t be outraged about, but you can’t pick and choose who’s rape to get upset over. Cersei, Daenerys and Sansa all deserved the same amount of outrage, but we didn’t see any of that.
