The South Side Chicago native gave the commencement address to the students of Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina Friday afternoon. After he delivered his speech, the chancellor of the school, Elwood Robinson, presented Lonnie with a doctorate of humane letters.
This puts Common in the same breath as his former collaborator and native Chicagoan, Kanye West, who formally received his own honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago last week.
