Ohio whiz kid accepted to 5 Ivy League Schools, 6 others


MASON, Ohio (AP) – A student in suburban Cincinnati who has been nationally recognized for his scientific research has been accepted into all 11 colleges he applied to – including five Ivy League schools.

Mason High School senior Bluye DeMessie was accepted into Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell and Princeton, as well as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Washington University in St. Louis, Johns Hopkins, Cal Tech, Berkeley and Ohio State University.

The 18-year-old DeMessie has been researching ways to make water cleaner after visiting relatives in Ethiopia the summer before ninth grade. Since then, he has created a way to quickly remove pollutants from water by converting agricultural waste into bio-charcoal.

His goal is to bring maintainable, improved water filtration systems to people in remote areas of developing countries, he said.
