Why we need more strong female role models on TV.

There are plenty of shows on television that have either a damsel in distress or the angsty teen dramas that make you roll your eyes. However, there are a few shows that have risen to the occasion and given girls the role models to look up to.

Brienne of Tarth played by Gwendolyn Christie is one of my favorites. During a time when women were meant to be seen and not really heard, Brienne is a fierce warrior and often underestimated. She goes against the grain and shows that it’s ok to fight for what you believe in.  She tries to do the right thing and makes mistakes but in the end, she is honorable.

Lagertha Lothbrok played by Katheryn Winnick. Lagertha is a Shieldmaiden. Shieldmaidens are thought to be the beginning origins of the Valkyrie. Lagertha doesn’t just sit home and take care of her family when the men go off to fight. She travels with her husband and is in the thick of the battle. She speaks her mind and commands an army. She is smart and deadly. Lagertha is another favorite of mine. She shows that women are just as fierce as their male counterparts. You can’t help but cheer for her.

Agent Peggy Carter played by Haley Atwell is another strong female role model. Set during World War II, Agent Carter works around the constraints of a male dominated office and saves the day. This show was supposed to be a filler to give us a little background to the story of Captain America. However, Peggy Carter uses the stereotypes that women are meant to be secretaries and bring the men-folk coffee, to her advantage. She is strong, smart and kicks some serious ass. I truly hope that we can see more of this strong female character.

Last, but certainly not least, we have Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emelia Clarke. She started off being a forced bride to the Dothraki leader Khal Drogo. She eventually starts to learn the Dothraki language and comes into her own. She really shines after the death of her husband. She may be down, but don’t think she is out. She is smart and savvy and also uses the “women are the weaker sex” to her advantage. She has overcome the hurdles that lay before her and has become a Queen and a force to be reckoned with.

All of these women are examples of strong females who use their brains and rise to do what is needed. Their paths aren’t always easy and they do make mistakes, but I think that our young girls need to see more characters like this. Obviously some of these shows aren’t suitable for children, but perhaps Hollywood could give young girls more positive role models to look up to. Instead of giving shows to the Kim Kardashian’s of the world that don’t really contribute anything of substance, we could see shows with women using their mind, working hard to achieve their goals.

I think the world needs more kick ass female characters for our girls to see.  Our self-worth shouldn’t be tied to our looks, but what we can contribute to society.
